Profile Information

About me...
My professional journey really began in 1997 when I was introduced to disability. Since that time I have had the honored opportunities to work with renowned scientists and researchers such as Dr. Paul Bach-y-Rita, Yuri Danilov and Mitchell Tyler in the groundbreaking field of sensory substitution. Through this work and more I learned how to manage my disability in ways that have never been done before. My experience goes into the power of going beyond typical treatments and learning how perceptions of disability and more provided ways for me to rediscover and reinvent my life. Some of my experiences have been documented through print and television media in the following:

Media – Print and television:
- Bestselling book “The Brain the Changes Itself” by
Norman Doidge (topic of first chapter)
- Canadian Broadcast Company Documentary “The Brain
that Changes Itself”
- Book - “In Search of the Lost Sense” by Scott McCredie
- Book – “Phenomena: Secrets of the Senses” by Donna
Jackson
- American Scientific
- National Geographic
- Wisconsin Public Television
- PBS
- New York Times
- Discovery Magazine
- On Wisconsin, Spring 2007 “Balancing Act”

My goal is to share my personal story of being introduced to disability, how disability transformed my life, how this experience re-defined my personal and career directions and how my experience opened the door to a whole new perspective on disability and life.

By providing a first person account it is my goal to introduce a new perspective of how disability feels, how persons with disabilities relate to services and the rehabilitation environment, and open a dialogue investigating the inside of disability. I enjoy sharing my insights into the world of disability and rehabilitation with humor, reality, truth and intensity.

Specialties:Public, motivational and keynote speaking, transition, dis(ability), inclusion, communication, rehabilitation, disability consulting

Please feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn.
Why are you joining the SDS Network?
I am passionate about self-advocacy, self-direction and transition and believe in the power of purpose. I joined the SDS Network as a way to be connected to and network with others who share a common vision of paving the way for persons with disabilities to accomplish and achieve their inner most dreams and goals.

Welcome to the SDS Network, Cheryl. I'm so glad to have another transition enthusiast join this community. It would be great to have you share your thoughts in a blog entry, where more people could read them and respond. If you'd like to do this, just click on "Quick Add" in the little box in the upper right hand corner of the page and then click on blog post.

This is still a rather new community, so if you have any questions about how to participate, please let me know.
