We have a story we would like to share.  After 12 years of trying to adopt, and not being allowed to due to stereotypes of developmental/physical disabilities, we were finally successful, after taking the case to Supreme court.  We are interested in speaking at the 2013 Wisconsin Dells SDS Conference.  Does anyone know who we could talk to about presenting?

Thanks Wanda for sharing your SDS story here... It sounds like using SDS has changed your life in important ways... I hope we hear more from you on this...

Following up on my post from yesterday;, living in rural areas, as many of us do, does have it's challenges also in receiving services.  And being on SDS does not necessarily mean those challenges are gone, it just means I have a little less challenge finding availble provider to hire.

For years other people made decisions for me, and I had no say.  Many of those decisions made by other people were bad decisions, and I was told in many ways I was not good enough and never would amount to anything.

Now  under SDS I can make the decisions I KNOW are good for me, and use providers locally that I know and trust instread of losing out on receiving services because a provider is not signed up with a managed care agency.

For years I have been determined that I would live my life, not someone else, and now I get to live my life.  I've never been valued as equal to those people who made decisions for me, so having someone value my decisions in my care is a strange getting used to experience.

I use self-directed supports to hire my own drivers to transport me in the community and to work related events in my own wheelchair accessible Van.  I also use self-directed supports to hire my own personal care attendants when I go out of town to visit friends or on speaking engagements about self advocacy and what it is to live with a disability.  To find out more about me go to my website at www.ChadMP.com :-)

We all have a story or two to share....stories that help us understand, stories that inspire us to make small changes, stories that connect us to others, and stories that cause us to question our greater purpose. I often ponder "my place" in the work that I do and found myself a little closer to the answer after a recent experience at a statewide conference. Since storytelling is a means to find connection, I share this story in the spirit of the SDS Network. transition_conference_experience_2010[1].doc

Many of us had the opportunity to learn about SDS last fall with a group of folks from Michigan. Here's one of those stories.SDS Hits the Road 11.1.09.doc
